The research for GELA REMEMBERED continues as we seek more stories and feedback. Every person who served at Firebase Gela in 1969 holds a valuable piece to an overall portrait of this remote outpost. It is the history of this base, and the history of the Vietnam War that is important to preserve. Your own personal recollections provide firsthand accounts desperately needed in order for future generations to fully understand and appreciate the sacrifices you made for your country. Over the next several months we will be contacting Gela vets directly in order to collect more stories and information. My associate and good friend Jim Huston will be spearheading this effort. I thank Jim for his dedication and enthusiasm for this endeavor.
BIG RED 1 AND FIRE BASE GELA REUNIONS THIS SUMMER!
The 1st Infantry's Big Red 1 Annual Reunion this year is in Lombard,IL from July 31st - August 5th. In conjunction with the BRO Reunion there will also be a FULL FIRE BASE GELA REUNION as well. We will share a suite with the 1/28th Black Lions. This will be a great opportunity for fellow Gela vets to reunite and reminisce. We will also set up a time for group pictures as well.
THE LOST CHILDREN OF CHON THANH
I am very proud to announce that the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago will be hosting our photo exhibit entitled "The Lost Children of Chon Thanh". This is a selection of photographs taken in Chon Thanh Vietnam in 1969 by U.S. Army 1st Infantry medic (and Gela vet) Bob "Doc" Shirley, along with "present day" images by New York photographer Reed Young. The exhibit will run through August and September of 2018. Another good friend, and my co-curator Brad Bona was instrumental in helping me put this incredible project together. I'm so appreciative of his input and professionalism in this exciting project.
